Introduction to

Swimming

Swimming is a popular exercise everywhere in the world. It dates back thousands of years, with evidence of recreational swimming in prehistoric times and competitive swimming tracing its origins to ancient civilisations.

Modern competitive swimming began to flourish in the 19th century, with the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 featuring swimming events. Today, millions of people across the UK regularly swim for recreation, fitness and competition.

With numerous swimming pools across the UK and beautiful open water locations near our clinics, it is no surprise that swimming-related injuries are common conditions we treat at White House Clinic. Our Sheffield Swimming Clinic brings together a specialist team in physiotherapy, sports medicine, strength & conditioning and nutrition to support swimmers and divers of all levels – from youth athletes to adult recreational swimmers.

Swimming is low-impact, but its repetitive nature, particularly in young, developing athletes, makes overuse injuries surprisingly common. That’s why our Advice Centre gives free expert advice on swimming techniques, injury prevention and conditioning. This information will help you to understand the principles of swimming fitness and which areas of your body you need to work on.

For swimmers who want to perform at their peak, our Sheffield Swimming Clinic is run by Nanette Oakes (Upper Limb & Shoulder ESP), Ric Lockhart (Specialist MSK Physiotherapist) and Dr Rosh Gunasekera (Consultant in Sport & Exercise Medicine), who have extensive experience treating swimmers and divers of all ages. The clinic offers comprehensive services including physiotherapy, strength & conditioning, sports medicine and nutritional support – all tailored specifically to the unique demands of swimming and diving.

Swimming is a fun way to get fit and be healthy, so hearing from those who swim regularly is always great. Like with any sport, swimming injuries and niggles can occur. However, almost all swimming-related injuries are treatable or preventable with specialist physiotherapy. Get in touch today with any questions about injuries or issues.
