Whether you’re suffering from a chronic condition such as osteoarthritis or an injury to the joint or soft tissue, our consultants are ready to treat you with precise, ultrasound-guided injections. From our main clinic in Sandygate, Sheffield, we offer corticosteroid injections, hyaluronic acid injections, shoulder hydrodistension, barbotage, and high-volume injections.

Specialist Sports and Exercise Medicine (SEM) injection clinic

At White House Clinic, our experienced Sports and Exercise Medicine consultants diagnose and treat musculoskeletal problems. Working closely with the general public and elite athletes, our consultants offer the best care from assessment and treatment to full recovery.

The first appointment with an SEM consultant will be an SEM assessment. Based on the assessment, they can diagnose and arrange a further appointment to treat conditions with injections if necessary.

If you are wondering how much an SEM injection costs, you might be surprised to know prices start from £325 . Those with private health insurance might be eligible for referral to our SEM service, with the assessment and investigation fees covered. There is also the option to self-fund.

Injection treatments we offer at White House Clinic

Following an assessment, the consultant will decide which type of injection is most suitable for your condition.

We use corticosteroid, hyaluronic acid, shoulder hydrodistension, barbotage and high-volume injections.

Corticosteroid injection

A corticosteroid injection, also known as a steroid injection, can help reduce inflammation and pain. The steroids mimic the natural ones in the body to help target inflammation and relieve pain. We often use these to help osteoarthritis and soft tissue injuries. The injections provide quick relief, but the effects are temporary. The injections might give you enough pain relief to continue with physiotherapy.

Hyaluronic acid injection

Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance, and helps restore the normal balance of synovial fluid in the joints. This offers a natural and sustainable approach for active individuals to manage osteoarthritis while continuing to engage in regular exercise. It’s a safe treatment option and can be part of a wider rehabilitation program. The effects are temporary; however, it is an excellent option for managing joint pain and continuing to exercise. In our injection clinic, we use Ostenil Plus during treatment.

Shoulder Hydrodistension Injection

Shoulder Hydrodistension is a treatment for Frozen Shoulder (Adhesive Capsulitis).

During the treatment, the consultant inserts a small needle into the shoulder joint. The injection contains a combination of sterile saline, a corticosteroid to reduce inflammation, and a local anaesthetic to numb the area. As the fluid expands into the joint capsule, it improves shoulder mobility.

Barbotage Injection

Barbotage is a treatment for calcific tendinitis. Calcific tendinitis happens when calcium deposits build up in the shoulder’s rotator cuff, leading to pain and stiffness. During the appointment, the consultant inserts a small needle into the shoulder. The injection contains sterile saline and local anaesthetic, which helps soften the calcium deposits. The doctor then uses the needle to break up and flush out the calcium, a process known as barbotage or lavage. Afterwards, the consultant will give a corticosteroid injection to reduce inflammation. Once the calcium deposits are broken down and removed, pain will be reduced and movement will improve.

High volume injection

When tendons are injured or overused, they can be thickened and painful. During this treatment, a consultant injects a small needle into the affected tendon. The injection contains sterile saline, local anaesthetic, and sometimes corticosteroid. This helps to disrupt unwanted blood vessels, reduce inflammation and create space for the tendon to heal.
