Neuro Pilates
Pilates was founded by Joseph Pilates over 80 years ago. It was developed as a way of improving the performance of dancers and gymnasts however it has evolved over the years and today benefits thousands of people applied in exercise classes. Pilates can suit and be adapted to everyone regardless of age or ability.
Neuro Pilates is a class designed specifically in mind for anyone struggling with a neurological condition. The class will be tailored to the needs of the attendees, and the numbers will be kept small to ensure technique can be corrected or help given if required.
Neurological conditions often lead to weakness, reduced or increase muscle tone and reduced balance. This can lead to a struggle with everyday tasks.
This class will be run by one of our qualified Neurological Physiotherapist Sally Wheatley who has many years of experience in treating these conditions.
It will use Pilates exercises to help correct unwanted movements and promote core stability, postural awareness, flexibility and improve muscles strength.
Often the exercises are done in standing or on a mat and consist of slow and controlled movements. However, if people struggle with postures the exercise can be adapted so they can be done standing near a wall, behind a chair or in sitting.
Classes like this can be suitable for anyone with a neurological condition. This could be stroke, Multiple sclerosis, Parkinsons or even if you have frailty issues and have become less mobile over time and feel you are at risk of falls as it can help improve your confidence and fear of falling.
The low impact exercise combined with functional neurological exercises can lead to an improvement in everyday activities such as walking, standing and reaching. Pilates can also relieve pain in the lower back, neck and other areas as deep postural muscles are strengthened.
Of course, the other benefit is being in a group environment with people with similar conditions and you may be encouraged by the social interaction!
