Why Employee Physical Health Is Becoming a Business Performance Issue

Workplace wellbeing conversations have traditionally focused heavily on mental health - and rightly so. However, physical health is increasingly becoming another major factor influencing workforce performance, productivity and retention across Sheffield and South Yorkshire businesses.

Persistent pain, stiffness, fatigue and musculoskeletal problems are affecting employees across a wide range of industries, often long before formal sickness absence occurs.

For employers, the challenge is not always immediately visible, but the impact on performance can be significant.

According to the Health & Safety Executive (HSE), stress, depression or anxiety and musculoskeletal disorders accounted for the majority of days lost due to work-related ill health in 2024/25 - 22.1 million and 7.1 million days respectively.

Employees suffering from work-related ill health took an average of 19.1 days off work per case, while musculoskeletal disorders alone resulted in an average of 14 days off per affected employee.

Presenteeism Is Becoming a Major Business Issue

Many employees continue working despite physical discomfort. They remain present, but productivity, concentration and energy levels are often reduced.

Persistent neck pain, headaches, lower back pain, shoulder tension and other MSK conditions can all affect day-to-day performance, particularly within desk-based and hybrid working environments.

The White House Clinic is seeing growing demand from businesses and employees across Sheffield looking to access physiotherapy and rehabilitation support earlier, before musculoskeletal problems develop into longer-term absence issues.

Hybrid working patterns have accelerated many of these problems. Long periods sitting at poorly configured workstations combined with reduced movement throughout the day have contributed to increasing levels of postural pain and stiffness.

Meanwhile, physically demanding sectors including manufacturing, construction, logistics and healthcare continue to face ongoing challenges linked to repetitive strain and physical overload.

Physical Health Is Now Part of Workforce Retention

Employee expectations around workplace wellbeing are changing.

Businesses that actively support employee health are often better positioned to:

  • Improve retention
  • Reduce operational disruption caused by injury and absence
  • Strengthen employer reputation
  • Support long-term workforce resilience
  • Improve overall employee experience

For SMEs especially, even a relatively small number of absences can place significant pressure on teams and operations.

Across Sheffield, the White House Clinic supports employees through clinics located in Sheffield City, Sheffield East, Sheffield Kelham Island, Sheffield North, Sheffield South and Sheffield West, helping improve access to physiotherapy, rehabilitation and recovery support across the region.

The clinic also has extensive experience supporting workplace wellbeing initiatives and occupational health services for organisations including Aviva, Inspire Learning Trust and FluidOne.

Practical Support Delivers Commercial Benefits

Supporting employee physical health does not need to involve large-scale corporate wellbeing programmes.

In many cases, relatively straightforward interventions can make a measurable difference:

  • Faster access to physiotherapy
  • Rehabilitation following injury
  • Movement and recovery advice
  • Exercise-based rehabilitation programmes
  • Support returning employees safely back into work

The White House Clinic provides physiotherapy, sports injury treatment, post-operative rehabilitation, massage therapy and musculoskeletal care across South Yorkshire, North East Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.

The aim is simple: help people recover earlier, move better and remain physically capable both inside and outside of work.

As businesses continue adapting to changing ways of working, employee physical health is increasingly becoming more than a wellbeing conversation. It is now a productivity, resilience and retention issue as well.

Businesses interested in workplace wellbeing support, occupational health services or physiotherapy access for employees can contact the White House Clinic for further information. Individuals looking for support with pain, injury or musculoskeletal problems can also book an appointment at one of the clinic’s Sheffield or regional locations.
