I qualified as a chartered physiotherapist in 2004 and quickly developed a specialist interest in women's health, inspired by supportive colleagues and the deeply rewarding nature of the work.
Over the course of my career I have worked in Manchester, London and Oxford and have been fortunate to work at some of the UKs leading hospitals. I have gained considerable clinical experience working within the NHS for over twenty years and my expertise lies in the assessment and treatment of both female and male patients with pelvic floor dysfunction.
Some of the conditions I commonly treat are included in the list below.
-Urinary incontinence (leakage of urine)
-Overactive Bladder - including urinary frequency, urgency and night time waking
-Pelvic organ prolapse
-Constipation and/or difficult defaecation (pooing)
-Faecal incontinence (stool or wind)
-Sexual dysfunction including pain and muscle overactivity (tightness)
-Postnatal issues including perineal scar, episiotomy and third/fourth degree perineal tears
-Post surgical advice and rehabilitation
-Core weakness
I have extensive experience working within specialist cancer teams supporting patients with gynaecological, colo-rectal and urological cancers, many of whom develop pelvic floor symptoms after surgery or cancer treatments such as, radiotherapy or chemotherapy. I have worked with patients diagnosed with neuological conditions, including Mutliple Sclerosis and Parkinsons disease.
After many years of clinical experience I know how embarrassing , isolating and difficult these symptoms can feel. Patients frequently share their sense of relief when they finally seek professional help and regain some control , often through simple conservative management. Known for my empathic, compassionate and supportive approach I am dedicated to helping patients improve their quality of life and it is a privelge to be part of my patient's rehabilation journey.
I am a member of the pelvic, obstetric and gynaecological physiotherapy (POGP) specialist interest group and a qualified pilates instructor.
Outside of work I am a busy mum to my six year old daughter. Together we enjoy exploring the Peak District, walking and cycling and cooking yummy dishes and bakes together. I have recently returned to my roots in Derbyshire after 24 years away. I have just completed the 'Couch to 5k ' programme after a personal injury and started to play touch rugby again after a seven year hiatus!
