Men tend not to mention leaking, urgency, or getting up three times a night, so it is easy to assume it is unusual. It is not. NHS England estimates that 61% of men in the general population experience lower urinary tract symptoms, meaning problems with passing urine1. Men's health physiotherapy is not a new service at the White House Clinic. It is the specialist pelvic health service we already provide, now with a page of its own so that men can find it. You are seen at our Chesterfield clinic, and you can book without a referral.

What men's health physiotherapy can help with

Most of what we see comes back to how the bladder, bowel and pelvic floor muscles are working, and how well they work together. The articles below go into each area in more detail and explain what physiotherapy can offer.

Prostate and bladder

  • Prostate problems and physiotherapy - what an enlarged prostate does to urinary symptoms, what to expect after prostate surgery, and where pelvic floor training fits alongside medical treatment.
  • Bladder symptoms: what you need to know - the different forms urinary symptoms take, why they happen, and when it is worth being assessed rather than working around them.

Bowel

  • Bowel problems: symptoms, causes and how physiotherapy can help - constipation, urgency and bowel leakage, and the practical things that help, from muscle training to position and diet.

Pelvic floor and nerve-related symptoms

  • Pelvic floor exercises for men - where the male pelvic floor is, what weakens it, and how to train it properly, including the common mistakes that stop it working.
  • Managing neurological bladder and bowel symptoms - how conditions such as stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's and spinal cord injury affect bladder and bowel control, and what can be done about it.

Who is men's health physiotherapy for?

It is for any man with a symptom involving the bladder, bowel, prostate or pelvic floor. That includes leaking, urgency, getting up at night, a slow or stop-start stream, dribbling after urinating, constipation, bowel urgency or leakage, and pelvic pain. Some men come after prostate surgery or alongside treatment for a neurological condition, and many come with no referral at all.

Symptoms like these become more common with age, but common is not the same as something to put up with. If they have been going on for years, that is worth saying rather than leaving out - how long they have been there helps shape the plan. If what you are after is general movement and mobility rather than pelvic health, our MOGA movement and mobility classes for men may suit you better.

How our men's health service works

If you are unsure which service you need, we would recommend being triaged by our team before you arrange an appointment. You can do this by calling 0114 230 2030 or emailing info@whitehouse-clinic.co.uk, and one of the team will briefly go over your concerns and identify the best person for you to see.

Your first appointment follows the same three stages set out on our women's health physiotherapy page. It starts with an open discussion of your symptoms, your history and how they are affecting your life, done sensitively and in complete confidence. That guides a detailed assessment, which generally looks at movement, muscle strength and breathing. From there, a treatment plan is put together with you, which may include hands-on muscle treatment, breathing work, assisted movement or strengthening, and a home exercise plan to carry on between appointments.

Specialist pelvic health expertise

There is no separate men's clinic and no separate men's team. Men's health is delivered by the same specialist pelvic health service as our women's health service, by clinicians who assess and treat pelvic floor dysfunction in both men and women. It is led by Hannah Gray, our Women's and Men's Health Specialist Physiotherapist, who qualified as a chartered physiotherapist in 2004, has worked in the NHS for over twenty years, and is a member of the Pelvic, Obstetric and Gynaecological Physiotherapy (POGP) specialist interest group. Her expertise lies in the assessment and treatment of both female and male patients with pelvic floor dysfunction, and she has extensive experience working within specialist cancer teams supporting patients with gynaecological, colo-rectal and urological cancers. All of our physiotherapists are registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and are members of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP).

How much does it cost?

Costs depend on whether you need an initial assessment, a follow-up, or a course of treatment. Current figures are listed on our prices page, and our reception team can talk you through the options if you are paying privately or using private medical insurance.

Book an appointment

You can book online or call our reception team on 0114 230 2030, and no referral is needed. Men's health physiotherapy is not yet listed separately in the online booking options, so calling is the quickest way to get the right appointment. If you would rather talk it through before booking anything, call the same number or email info@whitehouse-clinic.co.uk and we will help you work out the right starting point.

This page is general information and not a substitute for individual assessment. Book an appointment or call 0114 230 2030 to speak to our team.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a referral?

No. You can book directly with the White House Clinic without a referral from your GP or a consultant. Some men are sent to us by a urologist or after surgery, and others come on their own. If you are using private medical insurance, check with your insurer before you book, as some ask for a referral or pre-authorisation first.

Will I need a physical examination?

The assessment is led by your symptoms, and there is no set template. Anything physical is discussed with you beforehand and explained, and it only goes ahead with your agreement. You can ask questions at any stage, and you can decline or stop at any point. Much of a first appointment is conversation and general movement assessment.

Where can I be seen?
