Get Active in Hathersage

It’s easier to be healthy and active when you find the right places and pursuits. So we’re helping you get started with a quick guide to the best food, sports and facilities local to you.

Are you working towards a fitness goal, or do you just fancy playing sports as a fun way to meet new people? Maybe you’re looking to be part of a netball, football, or rugby team, or perhaps you are a lone wolf and like heading out on a solo hike in the hills. Whether you are up for joining a team, watching local sports, or finding gyms for classes and physio space, we have the best places to get active in Hathersage.

Outdoor activities

Situated in the Hope Valley with a hilly and wooded backdrop, Hathersage is an outdoor lover's dream. If you are a trail runner or Nordic walker, you’ll appreciate the many circular walks that take you through rugged moorland, wooded gorges, streams with waterfalls, and country lanes. A 30 m outdoor pool offers lane swimming, coaching, aqua fit, and family swim sessions.

Sports facilities

This Peak District village is home to a friendly, sociable and inclusive cricket club with junior and senior teams. Just outside the village in Hope Valley, is Bamford tennis club, welcoming players for matches, court bookings, and coaching.

Healthy eats

Home to cafes and restaurants, Hathersage has something to suit all tastes and dietary requirements. Riverside Kitchen has a healthy selection of options, from soups and sourdough to salads and smoked fish. Enjoy a pre-workout coffee at Colemans Deli or refuel with a hearty post-workout meal at Scotsman’s Pack Country Inn

Gyms

It may be a small village, but there is still an excellent gym. Best You Fitness offers a well-equipped gym space, fitness classes, and one-to-one personal training sessions.

Classes here are suited to all abilities, and there are options to sign up for the month, year, or just a single session.

Where to watch sports

Head down to the cricket club to watch a game in the sun; if football is more your game, check out the Hathersage junior teams and football games at Leadmill Grounds – teams might even be on the lookout for refs and coaches giving you something you can watch and enjoy! Some pubs in the village have Sky Sports where you can watch Premier League games on the TV.

Equipment hire

Experience the local countryside on a well-serviced and maintained hire bike from Bike Garage. This family-run cycle hire shop rents out bikes daily or weekly, providing helmets, tool kits, pumps, and route maps. The bike hire shop is slightly outside the village in Hope Valley, but it is worth the trip if you are a keen cyclist – you could cycle there in 10 minutes!

Festivals

The Hathersage Hurtle is an annual event in Hope Valley. It covers 20 miles and has 2,800 feet of ascent for participants to walk or run. There are hot drinks at the start, then stations serve homemade cakes along the route, and to finish, there’s a barbeque and beer! While it isn’t a festival, this event has a real energy and community spirit to it. For bigger events and food festivals, head into nearby major cities by rail or road.
