Walking Clinic

Hiking is a great activity for fitness and weight control, as well as being a great social activity. We are lucky to be able to access some of the best walking land in the country with our proximity to the Peak District. There is plenty to explore, and a great variety of terrain, from a nice easy stroll to a full hardcore day hike, we've got it all on our doorstep.

Sheffield and Derbyshire are prime areas for outdoor climbing; some would call it a mecca. It is a hugely popular pastime for many locals, and the nearby crags are often busy with climbers of all abilities.

Mountaineering injuries can occur in people of all ages and experience, from those who enjoy the occasional gentle stroll, to the extreme climber. Unfortunately we are all at some level of risk. If pitting yourself in the depths of nature is for your thing, there is nothing like being outdoors in all the elements have to throw at you. Hikers, walkers and backpackers are more likely to suffer with ankle, knee and hip problems. Steep rough descents can be a particular problem, and this is where the use of trekking poles can be helpful.

Common Walking Injuries: Sprained Ankle

Walking in the great outdoors comes with certain risks. If you are unfortunate enough to suffer a sprained ankle it is advisable to get it assessed and treated as soon as possible. If there is significant pain and you are struggling to walk on the leg, you may require an x-ray, to help rule out any damage to the bone.

Often, the injury occurs to the ligament on the outside of the ankle, known as the ATFL. Initially RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation) treatment is recommended to help reduce the swelling. Physiotherapy treatment may be required to help reduce the swelling further, using ultrasound and soft tissue massage. Taping can be of assistance in controlling the swelling and helping your mobility. We normally help to maintain and restore movement in the joint through exercises and mobilisations. You will follow a set rehabilitation programme designed specifically for you, to help restore your full function, balance, strength and movement, and get you back walking in the hills as soon as possible.

We are the only clinic in Yorkshire & Derbyshire to be accredited as physios for 'The London Marathon'

Whether you are injured or not, we will give you the tools in the form ofstretches, exercises, training advice, footwear recommendations to preventinjury and to realise your performance goals.
